Chapter 4
After a week of moping, Warren had pulled Zander Wesley’s business card from his wallet and made plane reservations. Currently he stood in the Phoenix airport, waiting to board. Since the night he shared with Jesse everything in his life had gone to hell. His usual carefree attitude and zest for life hit rock bottom. Why the man affected him so much was a mystery. It was unlike him to care beyond good-bye. Hell, he didn’t even know Jesse’s last name.
Warren considered the facts before giving Zander a call. He had gone to Lawless Sue’s every night in hopes of seeing Jesse again. Each night he became more depressed. Not that he had a clue what he’d say to Jesse anyway. “Hey, remember me? We had a great fucking night and now I feel real bad about skipping out on you. What do you say we start over?” No, that pathetic statement wouldn’t work. Beyond the sex, amazing sex, Jesse had held him in his strong embrace until he fell asleep. The last thing he had said before sleep took over was “stay with me.”
Warren couldn’t take it anymore. The regret was eating him up as fast as the antacids he chewed constantly since that night. Arizona and the proximity to the tavern were constant reminders that he was not only the biggest dick in the world, but also the most stupid of all creatures. The worst part was that he hadn’t tried in any way to get to know Jesse. He didn’t know the man’s last name, where he was from…nothing. Warren ignored the warm gaze in Jesse’s eyes when he looked at him. Behind his intense stare, Jesse had hoped for more than what Warren gave him.
Realizing he was stuck in a state of limbo, Warren decided to go to Montana. Whether or not he’d take Zander up on his offer was beside the point. Warren needed new scenery and something to occupy his mind and time for a while.
Later that afternoon, Warren exited the plane with a small bag, having opted to fly rather than drive. The numerous hours on the road with only his thoughts were the last thing he needed. Being in this funk was really dragging him down. His brothers hadn’t helped matters any. They both thought he deserved to win the royal douchebag award and said as much.
Throwing his bag over his shoulder, Warren began walking. He didn’t know if Zander would personally pick him up or send someone else. At this point he wouldn’t be surprised if Satan himself showed up. He already felt like he was in hell, might as well get the full treatment, he thought.
Warren entered the main foyer of the small airport and glanced around. Maybe he should have asked who would be meeting him. Before he could guess any longer a sign caught his attention. In bold letters it said, “Mr. Dance Fever.” John laughed from afar, amused at his choice of name for Warren. Warren had to smile, and it was the first time in a week he had done so.
